| Sixteen men and a dog.
This picture was sent in to the local press some years ago, under the caption `Barnet Football Club 1912/13`. I have not seen it published anywhere else before or since.
This season was the first year of the amalgamated clubs of Barnet (Avenue) and Barnet Alston, playing as `Barnet and Alston` in the new Athenian League. The date is clear on my copy but the club letters on the ball are not. Probably the original print is clearer. Who has this now ?
I think it may be a pre-season picture as the shirts are a mix of dark stripes (Black and amber?) and lighter coloured ones (green and white?).
Also the background is now thought to be the garden of the Black Horse (thanks Tony Rayner) (see the 1896 picture on this site.), although Underhill had been occupied by Barnet Alston since 1907.
Was this picture taken to celebrate the joining of the two rival clubs? email
